Buying a container is only half the job — getting it safely onto your site is the other half. This guide explains how shipping container delivery in the UK works, what access you need, and how to prepare so delivery day goes smoothly.
How are containers delivered?
At UK Container Hub we deliver nationwide using specialist vehicles. Smaller units are typically offloaded by HIAB (a crane arm mounted on the lorry), while larger or awkwardly placed containers may need a separate crane. This “drop-and-go” approach places your container precisely where you want it.
How much access do I need?
Clear, level access is essential. As a guide, allow room roughly twice the length of the container so the vehicle can position and offload safely. A 20ft delivery needs less space than a 40ft — if access is tight, that may influence your choice of size (see 20ft vs 40ft containers).
Preparing your site
- Ground — firm and level. Concrete, tarmac or compacted hardcore is ideal; avoid soft ground that could sink under the weight.
- Foundations — timber sleepers or concrete blocks under the corners keep the container level and off wet ground.
- Overhead — check for cables, branches and low structures; craning needs clear space above.
- Access route — make sure gates, driveways and corners are wide enough for the delivery vehicle.
How much does delivery cost?
Delivery is calculated at checkout based on your postcode and site requirements, with the price shown clearly before you pay. For a full breakdown of container and delivery pricing, see our UK cost guide.
On delivery day
Have someone on site to direct placement, keep the area clear, and confirm the door orientation you want before the container is set down. Once it’s in position, that’s it — your container is ready to use.
