Welfare that follows the work
On a linear job the crew moves and the cabin has to move with them. Craning a static unit onto a lorry every few days is expensive and slow, which is why wheeled canteens exist. This 20ft twin-axle unit is delivered and offloaded once by lorry, after which it is towed around site by any suitable vehicle and levelled on its four corner jacklegs wherever it stops.
It is also the answer where a conventional delivery lorry simply cannot get in. Sites with height restrictions, weight limits or tight turning circles will often take a towed unit when they will not take a wagon and a HIAB.
Being the largest towable size available, it needs connection to both water and electricity. Either can come from mains or from a generator, so it works on a serviced compound or on a verge. All-steel secure shutters and a steel door system are fitted, which is the practical requirement for anything left unattended overnight on an open road or in a public place.
It is a familiar sight with utilities contractors, groundworkers, main contractors, the Ministry of Defence and police forces. Common applications include motorway and highway maintenance, mobile incident units, mobile healthcare units and general canteen provision.
