When the cargo will not go through the doors
Some loads cannot be walked or forked into a container end-on. Machinery lifted straight off a bed, timber and steel sections longer than a forklift can turn, anything craned in from above: for all of these the roof is the access point, and an open top is the container that provides it.
These are one-trip units, so they are effectively new, and they are original purpose-built open tops rather than standard containers with the roof cut off. The distinction matters. A factory-built open top has the structural design and the fittings for the job from the outset, which a converted box does not.
How the top works
A weatherproof tarpaulin sits over removable supporting bows and secures down to the container. A removable hard top is available as an alternative if you would rather not handle a tarpaulin. Most units also have a removable header bar above the main cargo doors, which swings out of the way so you can also load lengthways at full height when that is easier.
