More cold storage on the same footprint
A high cube reefer occupies exactly the same ground area as a standard 40ft unit but stands 9ft 6in tall, so you gain cubic capacity without needing another metre of yard. Where space is the constraint and volume is the requirement, which describes most cold storage sites, that is the efficient answer. It also means tall or bulky temperature-sensitive goods go in upright rather than being broken down.
The floor is not an afterthought
Reefers use a non-slip aluminium T-floor rather than plywood, and the T-section profile exists to let chilled air circulate underneath the load. Without that airflow the pallets at the bottom of a stack sit warmer than the ones at the top, which is how a cold chain fails an audit despite the display reading correctly. It is one of the clearest differences between a purpose-built reefer and an insulated box with a cooling unit bolted on.
